His grasp of economic facts and the emergence of an understanding of the need for government to employ deficit spending to support demand is masterful. But he also presents the alternative and competing economic ideologies--both domestic and foreign--which influenced politics in the thirties. Knowledge of this history provides helpful context for understanding that contemporary political and social debate is a continuation of the long-running battle to define the role of government in the American economy.
